Netflix is under fire, again, for glamorizing something. This time, it’s anorexia. People are saying that the new Keanu Reeves & Lily Collins movie ‘Glamorizes’ the eating disorder and are petitioning for it not to be released. This kind of reaction isn’t new. It happened with the Selena Gomez produced show ’13 Reasons Why’ with people complaining that it glamorized suicide.
Let’s make something clear; the definition of ‘Glamorizing’:
make (something) seem glamorous or desirable, especially spuriously so.“the lyrics glamorize drugs”
13 Reasons Why definitely showed the pain of bullying, sexual assault and high-school angst. To The Bone seems to show the pain that an eating disorder does for, not only the family.. but the person suffering form the disease as well.
This is story-telling not glamour. If Lily Collins’ character was living the high life while being anorexic, that would be another story. But she’s in a group home, seeking treatment, and forming friendships that help her on her road to recovery. There’s a difference.
‘To the Bone’ hits Netflix on July 14th.
